Langway was drafted by the Habs in 1977, but was also drafted by the Birmingham Bulls of the WHA the same year. He spent a year in the WHA before deciding to jump back to the NHL and the Canadiens.

In his NHL rookie season, he played in 45 regular season games and eight playoff games, playing a part in the Habs Stanley Cup run.

He played another three seasons with the Canadiens before being traded to the Washington Capitals. Despite only scoring three goals in his first year with the Capitals, he won the Norris trophy as the league’s best defenceman. He repeated that feat the┬ánext season with another Norris trophy.

He played in six straight all-star games: two with the Canadiens and the next four with the Capitals.

He was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2002.
