Top 100 Habs: #98

#98: Denis Savard

Denis Savard missed his chance to play with the Montreal Canadiens in 1980, when the Habs passed on drafting him, instead choosing Doug Wickenheiser.

In the summer of 1990, he was traded from the Chicago Blackhawks to Montreal. Three years later, he hoisted his only Stanley Cup as a member of the Canadiens.

Savard was a flashy centre, with plenty of speed. Five times with the Blackhawks he had more than 100 points, and had at least 28 goals in nine of his first 11 seasons in the league.

He wasn’t horrible with the Habs, but he never lived up to the points that made him an all-star in Chicago. He had 179 points in three years with the Canadiens, but you could tell how far his skills had declined in the 1993 Stanley Cup playoffs, when he had no goals and five assists in 14 playoff games.

The 50 points he got in the regular season was the most he’d scored in any season for the rest of his career (another four years).
