Another weird name story

Less than a month ago, I blogged about people who name their kids stupid things. I wondered why people would call their kids a name that would get them teased (you can read that posting here).

Now, a new story has come out, where a judge in New Zealand has forced a family to change the name of a nine-year-old daughter during a divorce hearing. Her original name? Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii.

Oh come on! Are the parents really that stupid that they called their daughter Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii? Apparently.

Apparently, the girl was so humiliated by her name that she would tell people her name was “K”. (You can read the full story here).

Good on the judge for realizing the name was stupid, and for doing something about it. I don’t know how either parent deserves to raise a child after that.

The judge wrote “The court is profoundly concerned about the very poor judgment which this child’s parents have shown in choosing this name. It makes a fool of the child and sets her up with a social disability and handicap, unnecessarily.”

The AP article had more on names in New Zealand. “Registration officials blocked some names, including Fish and Chips, Yeah Detroit, Keenan Got Lucy and Sex Fruit. But others were allowed, including Number 16 Bus Shelter and Violence.”

I know I would hate to go through life called Number 16 Bus Station.

I say we create a new worldwide law. If you name your kid something stupid, someone has the right to slap you upside the head until you take a serious name.

The kids have enough of a problem being a child to these parents. No need in adding more of a problem by giving them a horrible name.

These parents must have been high/drunk when they picked out names … it’s ridiculous. They’re obviously not long-term effect thinkers either. Sheesh.
