New Brunswick school cancels national anthem

So a school in New Brunswick has decided to no longer play the Canadian national anthem, and it has some people upset.

Belleisle Elementary School  in Springfield, N.B., made the decision to no longer play the anthem to start each school day.

Apparently, it was a year ago the decision was made, but Susan Boyd just found out once her daughters start to forget the lyrics. She’s upset because her nephew, Pte. David Robert Greenslade, was killed while fighting in Afghanistan.

I don’t know what the big deal is. I grew up without the anthem being played every day. I only heard it while watching sports on television, or for an event such as Remembrance Day.

Not playing the anthem is not a sign a disrespect toward our troops. Many schools don’t play O Canada. If Boyd is that serious about her daughters knowing the anthem, then she can teach them at home.

    Mr. Millett,

Shame on you. Chosing to deny our children’s right to show their patriotism and sell out to extremism is proof beyond any doubt that your choice to serve Canadian youth was a huge mistake. Not only are you supporting a very small minority, you have obviously alienated yourself from the students and parents that love this country. Do the right thing and reverse your decision then go find another job if you can.

You don’t get it. It is part of our national identity, and there is no “human rights” issue for taking it out of the school. I had it played every morning through grade school and high school. It is an important part of our Canadian identity, and with soldiers still fighting for us overseas, it is disgusting that we don’t honour them through maintaining this cultural ritual.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, WHY ARE WE ALLOWING THIS?
WE ARE CANADIANS WE SHOULD BE PROUD TO SING THE ANTHEM EVERY DAY.
IF MORE PEOPLE STOOD UP & WAS PROUD OF THEIR COUNTRY WE WOULD NOT HAVE THIS, GET TOGETHER & FIGHT FOR OUR RIGHT WHICH ARE SLOWLY BEING TAKEN AWAY FROM US BECAUSE OF OFFENDING PEOPLE WHO CAME TO OUR COUNTRY TO BE CANADIANS. THEY MUST ADAPT OUT OF RESPECT FOR BEING CANADIANS
SICK OF ALL THE SPINLESS PEOPLE LETTING OTHERS TAKE ALL OUT RIGHTS AWAY,

This is an insult, after 30 years of dedication to this country. This is just a spitting inthe face of every dedicated canadian. It is time we stood up and take pride in our country, stop turfing aside our heritage for the minority. They chose to come live here, so they should abide by our patriotism..they do not like it, or feel uncomfortable with it..Please feel free to live in the USA, I am sure they would allow this..

Oh Canada is reinstated ! Bravo and thank-you. Bonsoir la visite !

My dear ‘Concerned’ northern brother/sister. We don’t want that type here either. We are having a horrible time assimilating our permanent visitors once they arrive. It’s really tearing apart our fabric. Don’t give up your principles.

Can Jehova Witness sing anthem? Can we? Yes.

The more appropriate question is, Do we?

Jehovah’s Witnesses give our allegeance to Jehovah God and his Kingdom Government, over which he has appointed his Son Jesus Christ to rule as King. (Isaiah 9:6, 7; Matthew 6:9, 10)

We are a global community serving as Ambassadors or Envoys for that Kingdom, therefore we choose not to participate in divisive nationalistic practices such as singing a national anthem of any nation.

Well, I wonder what the ethnic background is of the few parents who didn’t want their kids singing the Canadian National Anthem. Call it like it is. It’s time we stop accommodating the requests of the few for fear of offending. This is Canada and here we sing the Canadian National Anthem, proudly I might add. Shame on you, Mr.Millett. As others have said before me, you’re obviously in the wrong line of work. You’d best to move to Quebec and work in a French school there. Then your decision would be a popular one.

Two people complain about the singing of the national national anthem…the principal decided that it was no longer to be sung in the morning…50 people complain that the anthem is not being sung but the decision isn’t reversed…what’s wrong with this picture???????????

  9. Mr. Mallock (sic?)
Clearly you are putting the minority ahead of the majority. You are letting the few dictate to the many. My question is why? In all the news coverage there has not been a reasonable explanation as to why a few parents can dictate to you, as leader of this school community, what happens in the school. You have refused to be interviewed. I understand from the news that you have your personal views about our (well Canada’s) involvement in Afghanistan but these views should be separate from your offical role as principal. You have a choice to make. Principal or
protesting citizen. You can’t have it both ways.

There are two words to explain why no more “Oh Canada” . . . immigrant accommodation.

Newf you rate right up there with this idiot!

  12. Doug McRae

Two words explain this ludicrous decision . . . immigrant accommodation. The solution is simple . . . immigrants have the freedom here to move out of Canada.

Get a life Bob. Our anthem is a reminder of our great Country ! There’s no place like this on earth ! People died for this Country, the very least we can do is honour them by proudly singing (out loud) the Country’s song !

Hello, first of all is the Oh Canada song reinstated in the school?
I am an immigrant who gave birth to four canadian born children. I am proud of my children being Canadian born and they should be proud of who they are. I personally don’t agree that the anthem got pulled out of the morning schedule. I am sure that as I grew up in my country, I heard and had to pay respect to our anthem and when I moved to Canada I respected the Canadian anthem. Are we asking for other countries to stop playing their anthems? The anthem represents the country not a religion. Helloooooo!!!!
